Across many communities today, access to meaningful educational resources and historical knowledge is becoming more limited. Books that explore the histories of Black communities, Indigenous communities, and movements for justice are increasingly challenged or removed from schools and libraries. At the same time, many young people simply do not have consistent access to books at home.
The Little Lions History Literacy Program was created to help address this gap.
Founded by Shelly Smith, the Little Lions History Literacy Program was developed through the work of the Boston Chapter of the Black Lion Party for International Solidarity to provide young people with access to books that strengthen literacy while helping them understand the history that has shaped our communities.
The Little Lions program focuses on providing books for students in grades K–8, with an emphasis on stories and historical accounts that explore:
• African American history
• Indigenous history
• civil rights movements
• community leadership
• social justice and collective action
These books allow young readers to see themselves reflected in history while learning about the people and movements that helped shape the world around them.
Literacy is more than simply learning to read. True literacy means being able to understand ideas, ask questions, and think critically about the world. When young people have access to books that teach real history, they gain tools that help them understand both the past and their role in shaping the future.
The Little Lions History Literacy Program is built through community support. Books are collected through donations and book drives so they can be shared with young readers who need them most. Every donated book helps expand access to knowledge and encourages a lifelong relationship with reading.
Education has always been one of the most powerful tools for empowerment. When communities invest in young people and their ability to learn, they invest in the future.
Through the Little Lions program, we hope to help the next generation grow into strong readers, thoughtful thinkers, and informed members of their communities.
Knowledge builds confidence.
Knowledge builds power.
And every book placed in a young person’s hands helps shape the future.
The Little Lions History Literacy Program was founded by Shelly Smith and developed through the work of the Boston Chapter of the Black Lion Party for International Solidarity as a core initiative focused on youth literacy, historical education, and community empowerment.
